Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee for President of the United States, wrote this tweet May 21: “When I launched my campaign, I said we were in a battle for the soul of the nation–we’re seeing that soul on full display. Folks are reaching out to help one another and doing truly heroic things. It makes me so proud.” He was talking about our response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Today, I read that tweet in a very different context.
I, too, believe we are in a battle for the soul of our nation. I too, am proud of every single protester in every single state who is saying the time for systemic racism is over.
There are so many wonderful stories and images of our diverse nation coming together. One of my personal favorites is from D.C Mayor Muriel Bowser., the renaming of the portion of 16th Street that leads to the White House to Black Lives Matter Plaza, and the huge yellow letters along the road, words that can be read from space! What a brilliant action! What a brilliant response to this soul-less current president!
These stories and images are our truth. This moment is our moment.
I do believe we’re in a battle for soul of our nation, and I believe we are winning that battle. Our soul is on full display in the streets of cities around the country and in all those places around the world who are supporting us. We haven’t given up on our country, and the world hasn’t given up on us.
What an amazing time to be.
